Dr Leo McSweeney is a full time NHS Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist. He works in the Women’s Service at Arnold Lodge Medium Secure Inpatient Unit in Leicester. He has Approved Clinician status and is approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 as having special experience in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorder.
After gaining his medical degree Dr McSweeney worked in a range of medical and surgical specialties. He subsequently undertook the early part his psychiatry training in the Oxford Deanery before moving to complete training and take up his current Consultant post in the East Midlands.
He has worked in secure hospitals at all levels of security and has provided psychiatric care to mentally disordered offenders in prison settings and in the community. He has broad experience of providing psychiatric assessment, treatment and risk management.
He has a special interest in medical education and works with Health Education East Midlands (HEEM) to provide teaching to doctors working in the region. In addition, he is the East Midlands Coordinator for the European Federation of Psychiatric Trainees facilitating educational visits to Arnold Lodge for junior doctors undertaking psychiatric training in European countries. He has authored a number of academic papers regarding safe practice in forensic mental health settings and the use of telecommunications technology in psychiatry.
He has experience of providing psychiatric evaluation and recommendations in cases including serious violent offences, sexual offences, arson and harassment. Through his medicolegal work he has provided reports to the Crown and Magistrates Court, the Parole Board and the First Tier Tribunal (Mental Health). He is experienced in providing oral, expert evidence in these settings.
